Learn to be a bike mechanic!

We’re looking for a new summer intern mechanic.  This is a training position designed to take someone with no previous experience and turn them into a skilled bike mechanic.  We’re particularly interested in providing an opportunity to those who are typically underrepresented in the bike industry.  Check out the job posting here.  Please apply in person with resume and cover letter if you are interested.

The shop will  be close this coming may long weekend from the 19-21.  See you again on tuesday.

S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y

We are going to be closed this saturday (may 5th) due to some building maintenance.  We’re happy to have the day off because the Bike Coop is hosting TLC in the afternoon.  If you haven’t been on a TLC ride in the past, you’ve been missing out.  This ride is in celebration of the end of the school year here at UBC, where TLC stands for The Last Commute.  Last commute of the school year at least, we ride everywhere.  Join us in front of the Bike Kitchen at 3:00 on saturday for a great evening of bike fun.

We are hiring!

The Bike Kitchen is looking for some new mechanics to join our team.  We are hiring for a summer position that will start first week of May, with the potential to stay on year round. We are looking for an experienced mechanic to hit the ground running.  Applicants should be able to do service-writing and full tune-ups.
Advantages:
- The shop is run as a worker’s collective which provides a lot of freedom to make changes and implement ideas.
- Low-key vibe where human/environmental values are more important than the financial bottom line.
- Our do-it-yourself ethic means the mechanic will experience many different roles with co-workers, customers, and distributors.
Challenges:
-The primary goal of the Bike Kitchen is to serve the community, so we don’t always function as a regular commercial bike shop — effective communication skills a must!
-Our diverse clientele encompasses recreational riders, avid commuters, and high end road/mountain bike riders.
Qualifications:
- exceptional social skills
- a patient, caring communicator, teacher, and co-worker
- strong mechanical skills
- demonstrated appreciation of, and commitment to, the values of the grassroots cycling movement, including environmental sustainability and social justice
- the ability to work harmoniously and respectfully with a diverse range of people

If this sounds like you, come in and chat with us.  We’d love to meet you.

Holiday Closure

The Bike Kitchen will be closed from Friday April 6th through Monday April 9th. We will be open normal hours again on Tuesday April 10th. We follow a school schedule and are closed whenever the University is closed. Hope you get to enjoy a 4 day weekend too.

SPRING BREAK

We will be closed for UBC’s reading week after today, from Feb 18th-26th. We’ll reopen on Mon, Feb 27th at 10am. We look forward to seeing all of your tans and sunburns in two weeks.

If you’re looking for a used bike, make sure to stop in when we reopen. We will have a fresh batch of bikes waiting for you.

BIKE!BIKE!

BIKE!BIKE! is an annual north american conference organized by and for not-for-profit community bicycle projects and their allies is going to be held here in Vancouver this June!

There are a few organizations (PEDAL for example) and many individuals that are getting together to organize and host this empowering radical event for around 200 people from out of town. To keep this even fun, grassroots and accessible, we are looking for a few things that maybe you can help us out with. Here’s our wishlist:

-stoked folks, as many as possible, to make a dream team of volunteers. No skills required, but if you’re good at something, that’s sweet. if you’re good at aquiring free food, let’s scavenge together. Like to cook? Let’s stew up a delicious storm the weekend of the conference for the masses. If you can fix bikes, maybe you could come to a bike building work party to get those loaner bikes rolling smoothly.

-gently used bikes, preferably close to being rideable. To get around this lovely city of ours, conference goers need some wheels, and it would be a bit silly if it wasn’t a bike that was provided. Using donations from PEDAL and the Bike Kitchen, we’ll be having work parties to fix them up and make em safe. After the conference the bikes will be redistributed to people in the community in need of

-food stuffs, the edible kind. We’re going to be feeding many hungry mouths and hopefully we can do so with healthy fare that’s cheap or free. Do you have a hookup with a food distro? Know of any good dumpsters? What about preserves? Everybody loves jam, right?

-home stays, happy healthy places to rest weary heads. Everyone attending the conference from out of town will be staying at houses around the city. Do you have a spare bed, couch or nice section of floor that someone could roll out a thermarest for a few nights? What about a back yard with a bit of grass on which to pitch a wee tent?

Can you help out with any of these things? Or is there some other way you want to support this awesome event? Please sign up at the shop or email us your name, contact info (phone/email) and whatever you can help out with.

Winter Closure

The Bike Kitchen will be hibernating from Dec 10th through Jan 3rd. We will emerge again on January 4th to help you with all your winter cycling needs. Things to look forward to from the shop in the new year:
-lots of used bikes for sale
-clearer signage and wayfinding in the shop
-more secure bike parking locations
-regular maintenance classes
-big PnY night parties
and all the usual offerings.

Happy solstice! See you in 2012.

Bikes for sale!

Hey y’all! Need a bike? We have a bunch of refurbished road, hybrid and mountain bikes for sale at the shop right now. Get ‘em while they’re hot and it’s chilly!

STOLEN

We had our trailer towing bike stolen over the weekend.  Please keep an eye out for this bike and call the shop if you have any information about it’s whereabouts (604.827.7333).  Without this bike and it’s custom hitch (on the bike at the time of theft) we will not be able to use our large cargo trailer or continue to deliver CSA boxes for the UBC farm.  Bring back our Rocky, no questions asked, and help us continue to provide car free alternatives!

Ride for OUR future

Care about climate change and local environmental policy? Ride for Our Future is looking for cyclists to join them on a ride to Victoria to make the voice of the youth heard.
Don’t let them mortgage our future!

On September 24, the youth of BC are biking to Victoria to deliver a petition calling for real action on climate change. We are calling for:

- Investing in major expansion of public transit and the development of energy-efficient, healthy communities;

- Extending application of the carbon tax to all sources of emissions and committing to a continued schedule of annual increases in the tax after 2012;

- Rejecting BC’s participation in expansion of fossil fuel exports, including the proposed Enbridge pipeline to BC’s north coast, increased oil tanker traffic off our south coast, and expanded coal exports.

Please take a moment to sign the online petition on their website.
